Who are LHM’s Youth Members?

To put it simply, Youth Members are young people with half a heart. Our Youth Members are split into different age groups and we offer a little something for everyone!

Read below to find out how to get involved and what we offer each of our Youth Members.

Junior Zippers

Our Junior Zippers are LHM young members with half a working heart aged 8-10 years. As a Junior Zipper you will be able to get involved with our family events. Here you will be able to meet other people just like you! We also have an Open Day which we hold every year that you will be invited to as well! You’ll receive your very own ‘Jigzy’s News’ which is packed with other  Junior Zipper stories, information on upcoming events and some useful information about your heart condition.

LHM Youth Members

Young Members aged 11-18 years make up our LHM Youth Group. You’ll get invited to workshops, activity days and weekends, our annual Open Day and any of the other exciting events we hold! Youth Members Will recieve ”Big Hearts Matter” our youth newsletter that has articles about life with half a heart, more stories and information on the heart as well as info on up and coming events. All youth Members will be able to join our Chat Forum where you can join in with the different topic streams – talking to other youth members about day to day life with half a working heart. LHM Youth Members aged 13+ will also get the chance to join our private Facebook ands Instagaram group where you can chat to others and share your stories.

Adults With A Single Ventricle Heart.

As youth members get older and pass the age of 18 you then have the opportunity to become a full member.  You will get invites to events which are relevant to your age group along with the official LHM newsletter which includes more in depth information about your heart and how to take steps towards an independent adulthood. You’ll get the opportunity to link with  others in a similar situation and build your own network of support.

Sibling Youth Members

The Youth Zone isn’t just for young people with half a heart – their brothers and sisters are part of it too! Siblings are invited to all our youth events so that they can meet other brothers and sisters like them, because we know that it can sometimes be hard when you’ve got a sibling with half a heart. Like our LHM Youth Members this is for siblings aged 11-18.

“Thank you very much for Chris' card. I cannot believe he is 18 and am so proud of the lovely young man he has become, overcoming the many challenges we have faced over the years, especially in the first 4 to 5 years. Thank you Little hearts matter for always being there.”

Thank you to Chris and mum Philippa for sharing this fantastic news with us, we hope this brings some inspiration to the many families out there who are at the start of their half a heart journey.

With YOUR help, we can continue to support the amazing young adults living with a single ventricle heart today, just like Chris here. All you need to do spare 30 seconds of your time every day to vote for LHM in Persimmon’s ‘Building Futures’ initiative.

So pleased to see Amelia here, DILV, enjoying some cycling along with her sister Evie…

“We’ve been doing a lot of cycling this week as both girls have grown in confidence. I’m amazed at Amelia’s stamina on the bike, doing much more exercise than she’s ever done. This is the girl that needs a buggy to get home from school (in normal life). She’s found a sport that she can comfortably do. She says she feels free when she’s cycling. That makes me happy and sad at the same time ❤ “Cycling makes me feel free, happy and like nothing is in my way””

Riding a bike is great exercise for children, teenagers and adults with half a working heart. It helps get you from A to B but is also is supported exercise for the lower body and therefore provides good support for blood returning to the lungs. There are many incentives to help get you on a bike, at the moment.
