Who are LHM’s Youth Members?

To put it simply, Youth Members are young people with half a heart. Our Youth Members are split into different age groups and we offer a little something for everyone!

Read below to find out how to get involved and what we offer each of our Youth Members.

Junior Zippers

Our Junior Zippers are LHM young members with half a working heart aged 8-10 years. As a Junior Zipper you will be able to get involved with our family events. Here you will be able to meet other people just like you! We also have an Open Day which we hold every year that you will be invited to as well! You’ll receive your very own ‘Jigzy’s News’ which is packed with other  Junior Zipper stories, information on upcoming events and some useful information about your heart condition.

LHM Youth Members

Young Members aged 11-18 years make up our LHM Youth Group. You’ll get invited to workshops, activity days and weekends, our annual Open Day and any of the other exciting events we hold! Youth Members Will recieve ”Big Hearts Matter” our youth newsletter that has articles about life with half a heart, more stories and information on the heart as well as info on up and coming events. All youth Members will be able to join our Chat Forum where you can join in with the different topic streams – talking to other youth members about day to day life with half a working heart. LHM Youth Members aged 13+ will also get the chance to join our private Facebook ands Instagaram group where you can chat to others and share your stories.

Adults With A Single Ventricle Heart.

As youth members get older and pass the age of 18 you then have the opportunity to become a full member.  You will get invites to events which are relevant to your age group along with the official LHM newsletter which includes more in depth information about your heart and how to take steps towards an independent adulthood. You’ll get the opportunity to link with  others in a similar situation and build your own network of support.

Sibling Youth Members

The Youth Zone isn’t just for young people with half a heart – their brothers and sisters are part of it too! Siblings are invited to all our youth events so that they can meet other brothers and sisters like them, because we know that it can sometimes be hard when you’ve got a sibling with half a heart. Like our LHM Youth Members this is for siblings aged 11-18.

A few weeks ago, we shared a news article about John and Kate Carlton who have been fundraising for Little Hearts Matter. This family’s amazing support doesn’t stop there, as their 9 year old daughter May also arranged for her school to take part in a non-uniform day for Little Hearts Matter. She put together a PowerPoint presentation and spoke to her Headteacher who agreed to hold a fundraising day for LHM.

Just look at how many donations were received on the day – well done May, you’re a star! ❤️ To get involved and register your fundraising, click here: www.lhm.org.uk/get-involved/fundraising/register-your-fundraising/

    Youth Support

There are young people living with half a heart across the country, many aged between 11 and 18. It is massively important for all of these brave young people to have access to the care, guidance and support they need – allowing them to live life to its full potential that their heart will allow.

Lexie runs our Youth Services, supporting our youth members in a variety of ways, throughout their half a heart journey. These young members are invited to Activity Weekends and Education Days where they will explore their heart condition and seek solutions to the challenges that having half a heart brings. They will also have an opportunity to meet with other young members, online and in person, making friendships and helping them feel less alone.

Did you know our youth members also consist of siblings? We know it can be a tough road for them too, so they also have a chance to chat with each other for support from people their age that truly understand. You can find out more about our Youth Services by clicking here www.lhm.org.uk/youth-zone/
