Little Hearts Matter has been a wealth of support and information to us throughout our pregnancy and our boys life so far.
In 2019, coinciding with our 25th anniversary, we have got 1 place in the Virgin Money London Marathon for the first time ever!
For the 2019 marathon, a world record of 414, 168 people applied to run in the marathon – an increase of 7.3% from the year before. However, there are only 6,000 places available in total… and one of them is ours!
We opened applications a couple of months ago, and were over-whelmed by the amazing applications we received. It was touching to see so many members and supporters who wanted to run to raise funds for children with half a heart.
As tough as the decision was, we have chosen the runner for 2019… Melissa, who will be the first person to run in the London Marathon for Little Hearts Matter in an official charity place.
Below, Melissa explains why she is running for LHM:
Little Hearts Matter has support me since February, 2016. During my 20 week scan we were told that our unborn baby has hypoplastic right heart syndrome and would need 3 open heart surgeries to live. Our baby was born in July 2016 and has had all 3 open heart surgeries. Little Hearts matter has been a wealth of support and information to us throughout our pregnancy and our boys life so far. Despite having had all planned surgeries, Little Hearts Matter will always be there for us as our boy will have a lifetime of check ups and monitoring. Equally we will always be there for Little Hearts Matter as there will always be families joining the half a heart community who needs support as well as existing families who will benefit from our knowledge as we have been through the surgeries.

Melissa has been working hard to raise sponsorship, and the next event she has planned is a family fun day at Caton Park. As part of this there will be a cake stall and a raffle which Melissa has found some fantastic prizes for – including theme park tickets and a voucher for www.experiencedays.co.uk. She’s also sharing her marathon journey on https://melissabainesfundraising.home.blog/
We’d like to say a massive GOOD LUCK to Melissa, and congrats on being the first ever official LHM runner!
