Evie’s story

For the first three months of the year, I swam 2016 lengths in a 25 metre pool to help ‘Little Hearts Matter’ because they have helped him in the first years of his life. I wanted to fundraise for them because I wanted to thank them for what they’ve done to help Oscar and his family.

My cousin, Oscar O’Grady, only has half a working heart.

Evie_Swimming_2Last year, I was on holiday. My family and I were thinking about healthy challenges that we wanted to do. We were firing ideas around and I came up with the idea that I could swim 2016 lengths in the first quarter of 2016. That idea grew and became into an actual swimming challenge. I thought that it would really challenge my swimming ability and endurance.

For the first three months of the year, I swam 2016 lengths in a 25 metre pool to help ‘Little Hearts Matter’ because they have helped him in the first years of his life. I wanted to fundraise for them because I wanted to thank them for what they’ve done to help Oscar and his family.

My feelings about this challenge varied. Some days I felt absolutely awful and some days I would swim 2 kilometres, double my daily average. Some days I will have done PE or performing arts at school, and that would really effect my swimming. But in the end, I thought of Oscar, and that’s what kept me going.

I really grew towards my swimming challenge over the three months. And in the last few days I didn’t want it to end. At my final ten lengths, all I could think was ‘it’s going to end, it’s going to end.’ And at my final touch of the side I was happy and relieved, but also a bit lonely, like I’d lost something big in my life, but it was a very big thing in my life for those months. It felt like the water would never be the same again.

I’ve raised around £1200 and hope to raise more in future fundraising. I’m already planning another challenge to do later this year and I can’t wait. I hope that you can help this wonderful charity in any way you can because they are just wonderful people. Thank you.
